How to wire a food waste disposer electrical supply

Food waste disposers (InSinkErator, Franke, Smeg and similar brands) are still relatively uncommon in UK kitchens, but the electrical connection is simple: a 13 A switched fused connection unit above the worktop and a short cable run into the sink base cabinet. Get the switch position right, use the correct fuse, and the job completes on a Minor Works Certificate. This UK guide covers all of that.

Before you start. Isolate the kitchen ring final circuit at the consumer unit and confirm dead with an approved voltage tester at the socket you plan to spur from. Food waste disposers are connected under the sink, close to the trap and waste pipework. If the kitchen sink area has any sign of water damage, leaking pipes or past flooding, deal with that first: you should not be adding a 230 V appliance to a wet sink cabinet.

1. Check the disposer's electrical specification

Read the fitting instructions before you buy accessories. UK market food waste disposers run at 230 V 50 Hz. The motor size varies: the InSinkErator Evolution 100 draws about 500 W (roughly 2.2 A), the Evolution 250 about 775 W (about 3.4 A). Even the largest domestic model is well within a 13 A fused spur's capacity.

Some models are supplied with a pre-fitted UK plug on a short flying lead. Others have a bare terminal block inside the wiring compartment. Note which you have, because it affects how you wire the load side of the FCU.

2. Position the switched FCU above the worktop

The switched fused connection unit must be accessible without opening the sink cabinet. The standard position is on the tile splashback, above the worktop, within 2 metres of the sink. This gives the homeowner a clear, reachable switch to isolate the unit if the waste blocks or leaks.

An alternative is on the wall beside the sink cabinet rather than directly behind the sink. Either works provided it is outside Zone 1 and Zone 2 if the sink is close to a dishwasher or washing machine sharing the same splash zone.

Do not put the FCU under the worktop lip where it is out of sight and hard to reach. The point of the FCU is daily convenience -- a buried switch defeats that purpose.

3. Spur from the kitchen ring final circuit

Run 2.5 mm2 twin-and-earth from the back box of the nearest kitchen ring socket to the supply (in) terminals of the FCU. Confirm the socket has not already been spurred: pop the faceplate, count the cables in the back box, and trace any that leave as a single tail rather than continuing the ring.

Connect brown to L, blue to N, and green-and-yellow earth (sleeved) to the earth terminal. Tighten to the FCU manufacturer's torque specification, usually 1.2 to 2.0 Nm.

4. Fit a 13 A fuse -- not a smaller one

Fit a 13 A BS 1362 fuse in the FCU carrier. The motor's start-up inrush current, particularly when it hits a hard piece of waste, is high enough to nuisance-trip a 3 A or 5 A fuse. InSinkErator's UK installation instructions specify 13 A. Fit anything smaller and you will get call-backs for a nuisance-tripped fuse.

5. Drop into the sink cabinet and wire the disposer

From the load (out) side of the FCU, run 1.5 mm2 flex down through the wall or worktop upstand into the sink base cabinet. Keep the cable clipped or chased rather than loose.

If the disposer has a bare terminal block: connect brown to L, blue to N, green-and-yellow to E. Tighten to the torque in the fitting instructions and replace the terminal box cover.

If the disposer has a pre-fitted UK plug: fit a 13 A switched socket inside the cabinet, wired from the FCU load terminals, and plug the disposer into it. The FCU above the worktop remains the accessible isolator. This arrangement makes the disposer easy to unplug for maintenance without disturbing the wiring.

6. Test, energise and certify

With the circuit dead: continuity of all conductors, insulation resistance between live and earth, and polarity at the FCU and disposer terminals. Energise, check earth fault loop impedance (Zs), confirm the 30 mA RCD trips in under 40 ms at 5 times rated current, and run the disposer empty to confirm clean start-up.

Issue a Minor Works Certificate (spur off an existing ring) or a full Electrical Installation Certificate (dedicated new circuit from the consumer unit). Give the homeowner a copy and keep one for your records.

Stop and call a qualified electrician if: the kitchen ring circuit has no RCD protection, the socket you planned to spur from is already spurred, you find aluminium conductors in the ring (older 1970s wiring), or there is evidence of water damage inside the sink cabinet that suggests the wiring run will be near damp surfaces.
