How to wire a kitchen electrical second fix

The second fix is where cables become working circuits. All the back boxes, socket outlets, the cooker control unit, extractor isolator, and under-unit lights get connected and tested before the kitchen fitter covers up the cable routes for good.

Before you start. Confirm the supply is isolated at the consumer unit and confirmed dead with an approved voltage tester. Second-fix connection work requires that the first-fix cables are already in position, undamaged, correctly routed, and labelled. If any cable shows signs of damage from the plastering or tiling trades, address that before connecting anything.

1. Check first-fix cables are in position

Walk the kitchen layout with the plan and confirm every cable has been pulled through to its correct position. Both ends of the ring final must be present and accessible at the consumer unit. The cooker supply cable should be stubbed out at the correct height for the control unit position agreed with the kitchen fitter.

Check cable labels - one mix-up between a ring spur and a lighting circuit can cause a dangerous fault. If labels have been disturbed during tiling or plastering, trace each cable before connecting.

2. Fit socket back boxes flush with finished surfaces

Tile and plasterboard surfaces each add depth compared to bare block. Measure the finished surface depth at each socket position and choose back boxes accordingly. A socket box that sits proud of the tile face will not be covered by the faceplate and will fail inspection.

Fit each box level, using a small spirit level. A crooked box shows through the faceplate regardless of how carefully the faceplate is fitted. On tiled walls, mark and drill fixing positions before grouting to avoid cracking grout joints later.

3. Connect the ring-final socket outlets

On a ring final, two cables enter each back box - one arriving from the previous socket, one leaving to the next. Both brown (live) conductors connect to the L terminal, both blue (neutral) conductors to N, both earth conductors to E. Tighten each terminal to the manufacturer's torque rating (typically 0.4 Nm for 2.5 mm²).

A spur socket at the end of a branch has only one cable. Connect it at L, N, and E. If a socket is a switched fused connection unit (FCU) rather than a standard socket, follow the same principle: ring conductors to the feed terminals, outgoing supply to the load terminals.

4. Wire the cooker control unit and cooker connection unit

The double-pole cooker control unit connects the radial circuit from the consumer unit to the cooker. The incoming cable (from consumer unit) connects to the mains-side terminals; the outgoing cable (to the cooker or to a nearby cooker connection unit) connects to the load-side terminals.

Earth the cooker control unit at its earth terminal. If a separate cooker connection unit is used close to the cooker position, earth that separately as well. Use heat-resistant flex between a range cooker and its connection unit if the unit is positioned above a plinth that may get warm.

5. Wire the extractor hood isolator

An extractor hood typically connects via a fused connection unit (FCU) wired as a spur from the kitchen ring final. The ring spur cable connects to the feed-side terminals of the FCU. The outgoing supply (to the hood) connects to the load-side terminals and should be fused at 3 A or 5 A to match the hood's rating.

Position the FCU where it is accessible but not directly under the hood - a FCU above the hood is unreachable once the hood is fixed. A position in an adjacent unit at high level is common.

6. Connect under-unit lighting FCU and switch

Under-unit LED strip lighting typically runs from a separate FCU on the ring final, feeding one or more LED drivers. The driver output connects to the LED strip or strips. A switched FCU provides on/off control at the unit; alternatively, a separate rocker switch controls the supply from an unswitched FCU to the driver input.

Keep the low-voltage LED driver wiring (typically 12 V or 24 V DC) separate from mains wiring inside the wall unit. LED drivers generate some heat - do not bury them in insulation or against combustible material.

7. Test before the kitchen fitter closes up

Before plinths, end panels, and cabinets seal off the cable routes, test every circuit. Minimum checks: ring continuity (end-to-end resistance of each ring leg), polarity (brown conductors at live terminals), and insulation resistance (all circuits to earth at 500 V DC). Note the test values.

If any test fails, trace the fault before the fitter resumes. A fault discovered after the kitchen is installed will require cutting panels, removing tiles, or disassembling units - far more disruptive and costly than identifying it now.

Stop and call an electrician if: any cable is damaged, the insulation resistance reading is below 1 megohm, you find old rubber-sheathed or cloth-covered cable in the kitchen wall, the ring continuity test gives an open circuit, or a circuit trips the RCD when tested. These are not faults to work around on a kitchen second fix.

Kitchen electrical second fix is Part P notifiable work in England - adding new circuits (ring final, cooker circuit) requires notification to Building Control or a registered electrician who can self-certify.
