1. Identify and isolate the correct circuit
At the consumer unit, find the MCB or fuse for the ring or radial circuit that feeds the socket you want to blank. Switch it off. In a house with an older rewireable fuse box, pull the fuse carrier and pocket it so nobody can restore the circuit while you are working.
Go back to the socket and test all three terminals with a voltage tester: live, neutral, and across live-to-neutral. All should read dead. If anything reads live, you have the wrong circuit - go back to the board and check again.
2. Remove the socket faceplate
Unscrew the two faceplate screws (usually at top and bottom centre). Ease the faceplate away from the back box gently. Most sockets have a little slack in the cables behind them, but do not yank. Rest the faceplate on the wall or hold it with one hand while you work on the terminals.
Take a photo of the wiring before you touch anything. On a ring final circuit there will typically be two sets of conductors at the live, neutral and earth terminals. On a radial there will be one.
3. Disconnect and cap each conductor
Loosen each terminal and remove the conductors one at a time. As soon as a conductor is free, cap the end with an insulation cap or wrap it securely with two layers of insulation tape. Do each one individually before moving to the next.
Keep live, neutral, and earth separate inside the box. They must not touch each other or any metal part of the back box, even though the circuit is switched off. The circuit will be live again once you restore power, and the conductors inside the box will be energised.
4. Fold the cables into the back box
Coil the cables gently so they sit neatly inside the back box. Do not force them or create sharp bends near the conductor ends. On a ring circuit with two cables, this takes a little patience - work the loops alternately so neither cable is under strain.
Check that no conductor end can work its way into contact with another. If the box feels very full, choose a blanking plate with a slightly deeper profile or use rubber-insulated caps rather than tape, which are more compact.
5. Fit the blanking plate
Offer up the blanking plate to the back box. Check through the gap as you close it that nothing is being pinched. Push the plate flat against the wall and check it sits flush - if the cables are pushing it off, fold them further into the box first.
Insert the two fixing screws and tighten evenly, alternating between them, until the plate sits snug. Do not overtighten or you risk cracking a plastic plate or stripping the back box threads.
6. Restore power and check
Go back to the consumer unit and switch the circuit back on. The blanking plate should just sit there doing nothing - that is the whole point. If an RCD trips when you restore power, switch off again and check your work: an insulation cap may have come off, or a conductor may have touched the back box metalwork.
When to call us

But if you open the socket and find old rubber-insulated cables, damaged insulation, or a back box full of junction-taped joins from a previous owner, that changes things. Those are signs of a wiring installation that needs looking at properly, not just covering up.
