1. Confirm your fan uses the 3-plate method
There are two standard wiring methods for a bathroom extractor fan.
- 2-plate method: The fan takes a switched live from the lighting junction box. It runs only while the light is on, and stops the instant the light goes off. The lighting circuit MCB provides overcurrent protection. No separate FCU is required, though one may be added.
- 3-plate method: The fan receives both a switched live (to trigger it with the light) and a permanent live (to power the overrun timer after the light goes off). The permanent live must pass through a fused connection unit before reaching the fan.
If your fan keeps running for a set period after the light is switched off, it is on the 3-plate method and must have an FCU. If it stops immediately with the light, it is likely on the 2-plate method. A humidistat fan that runs independently of the light switch also needs a permanent live via an FCU.
2. Locate the fused connection unit
On a 3-plate installation the FCU is usually in one of three locations.
- In the ceiling void above the bathroom, fixed to a joist directly above or near the fan position.
- In the loft space immediately above the bathroom.
- Surface-mounted in the ceiling of an adjacent room or an airing cupboard, where loft access is not available.
The FCU looks like a standard single-gang wall plate with a small fuse carrier window in the centre of the faceplate. If you have a timer fan and cannot find an FCU anywhere in the supply run, the permanent live is connected directly to the fan without overload protection. That is a non-compliant installation: an FCU needs adding, not just checking.
3. Switch off and confirm dead
Switch off the lighting circuit MCB at the consumer unit. Test dead at the FCU using an approved voltage tester: probe between line and neutral, and between line and earth. If the FCU is in a ceiling void or loft, take care of your footing before working at height.
If the bathroom has a separate dedicated radial circuit as well as the lighting circuit, switch that off too before working in the ceiling void.
4. Open the FCU and check the fuse rating
Remove the two screws from the FCU faceplate. Pull the fuse carrier gently out of its slot with your thumb. Read the rating on the end of the cartridge. It should say 3 A.
Common errors found in existing installations:
- 5 A fuse: The next standard cartridge size above 3 A. Bathroom fans draw 20 to 50 W, which is well under 220 mA at 230 V. A fault current under most motor failure modes sits well below 5 A. A 5 A fuse will not operate, so a failing fan motor can run at elevated temperature indefinitely until the winding burns out.
- 13 A fuse: Sometimes fitted because it was the only cartridge available. At 13 A, the fuse provides essentially no protection for a load this small. The motor would need to draw many times its rated current before the fuse would operate.
A 3 A fuse is correct because the fan's normal running current sits well below 0.25 A, so the fuse is comfortably above the normal load whilst still being close enough to the fault current range of a failing motor to provide genuine protection.
5. Fit a 3 A BS 1362 fuse cartridge
If the existing fuse is not 3 A, remove it and replace it with a 3 A BS 1362 cartridge. This is the same type used in standard 13 A plug tops: a 25 mm glass or ceramic tube with end caps, rated 3 A. Push it into the carrier with the rating end visible. Replace the carrier in the FCU, and refit the faceplate screws. Restore the MCB at the consumer unit.
Do not substitute a different fuse type, and do not fit two 3 A cartridges in series in an attempt to use what you have to hand.
6. Test the fan and overrun
Switch the light on and check the fan starts. Switch the light off. The fan should continue running for the overrun period set on its internal timer (typically 10 to 15 minutes for a standard bathroom) before stopping automatically.
If the fan stops immediately with the light after this procedure, the overrun timer is not receiving a permanent live. Check the Line In terminals at the FCU carry an unswitched permanent live from the junction box, and the Line Out terminals connect to the fan's permanent live terminal. If the fan does not start at all, check both the FCU fuse and the switched live connection.
