Understanding three-phase supply in a domestic property

Most UK homes run on single-phase 230 V supply, but rural properties, large detached houses, and older farm buildings sometimes have three-phase. Understanding what you have changes how you size circuits, balance loads, and approach an EV charger or heat pump installation.

Before you start. Three-phase supplies carry 400 V between phases. Never open the main cut-out (the sealed unit before the meter) - this is the property of your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) and only they are authorised to work on it. If you are investigating a fault or planning new circuits, confirm dead with a voltage tester before touching any conductors.

1. What three-phase supply actually means

UK mains electricity is generated and distributed as three-phase alternating current. Most homes receive only one of the three phases, giving the standard 230 V single-phase supply. Properties with three-phase service receive all three phases plus a shared neutral, allowing a total connected load up to three times larger than a single-phase connection.

Each phase alternates at 50 Hz and carries 230 V to neutral. The three waveforms are offset by 120 degrees from each other, which is why the line-to-line (phase-to-phase) voltage measures approximately 400 V rather than 460 V. This 400 V supply is used directly by three-phase motors, three-phase EV chargers, and some commercial equipment.

2. Identify three-phase at the meter

Open the meter cupboard and look at the cables entering the cut-out. A single-phase supply has one live conductor (brown) and one neutral (blue). Three-phase has three live conductors, typically coloured brown, black, and grey in modern installations, plus a neutral (blue). Older installations may use red, yellow, and blue for the three phases.

The cut-out (the sealed fused unit before the meter) will be larger than a single-phase version, and may carry a rating of 60 A, 80 A, or 100 A per phase. The meter itself will usually display separate readings or registers for each phase.

3. Read the distribution board layout

A three-phase consumer unit has a four-pole main switch (switching all three phases and neutral simultaneously), three busbar rails (one per phase), and individual MCBs or RCBOs connected to each rail. Each circuit connects to one phase only, so the phase it sits on is determined by which rail the MCB connects to.

Open the consumer unit cover and look for the phase labelling on the busbars. Modern consumer units are often labelled L1, L2, and L3. If there is no labelling, a phase rotation meter or a qualified electrician with a three-phase tester can confirm which phase each MCB sits on.

4. Balance loads across phases

Unbalanced loading across phases causes voltage imbalance and increases neutral current, which can stress conductors and equipment. The goal is to assign high-draw circuits roughly evenly across the three phases rather than stacking them on one.

A typical approach in a domestic property with three-phase: put the cooker circuit on L1, the EV charger on L2, and the heat pump on L3. Lighting and socket ring finals can be split: two rings on one phase, one on another, and so on. Perfect balance is rarely achievable, but keeping any one phase more than 20-30 A heavier than the others warrants redistribution.

5. Check earthing and bonding

Three-phase domestic installations follow the same BS 7671 earthing and bonding requirements as single-phase. Main protective bonding conductors connect water, gas, and oil service entry pipes to the main earthing terminal. The earthing conductor from the main earthing terminal to the cut-out earth connects to the DNO's earth, or to an earth electrode in TT systems.

The neutral and earth conductors must be kept separate throughout the installation except at the main earthing terminal. A common mistake in older three-phase boards is combined neutral bars where neutral and earth are bonded together on sub-circuits - this is not permitted under BS 7671 18th edition.

6. Know when to notify your DNO

Any connection to or modification of the three-phase service cable or cut-out requires the DNO - in Kent this is UK Power Networks. Changes that require notification or agreement include: upgrading from single-phase to three-phase, adding a three-phase EV charger or heat pump that significantly increases demand, or altering the main fuse rating.

The DNO notification process for a new large load (22 kW+ three-phase EV charger, for example) is known as a G99 application. Smaller single-phase loads below 16 A use the G98 simplified notification route. Your electrician or charger installer handles this as part of the installation.

Stop and call an electrician if: you can see three live tails but are not sure which phase each circuit is on, you see signs of overheating on the neutral bar, the consumer unit has no phase labelling or markings, or you are planning to add any load above 3.68 kW to a phase that is already heavily loaded. Three-phase faults can be complex to trace safely.
