How to charge an e-bike or e-scooter safely at home

Lithium battery fires from e-bikes and e-scooters have caused deaths in the UK. Most are preventable. The risks come down to three things: using the wrong charger, charging in the wrong place, and leaving the battery unattended. Get all three right and the risk drops to manageable levels.

Before you start charging. Inspect the battery casing for cracks, swelling or damage. A chemical or sweet smell can indicate cell damage. If anything looks or smells wrong, do not charge the battery. A damaged lithium cell can go into thermal runaway without warning.

1. Use only the approved charger

Lithium cells charge at a precise voltage and current. The charger supplied with your e-bike or e-scooter is matched to the battery management system in that model. A charger with the wrong output voltage can overcharge individual cells, heat them beyond safe limits, and trigger a fire.

If you need a replacement, buy one recommended by the manufacturer or with an identical voltage and current rating and a UKCA or CE mark. Avoid very cheap chargers from unknown sources - counterfeit chargers are one of the most common causes of e-bike battery fires in the UK.

2. Choose a safe charging location

Where you charge matters as much as how you charge. The guidance from fire services and Electrical Safety First is consistent: charge on a hard, non-combustible surface and away from anything that could catch fire or block your escape.

A hallway or staircase is particularly dangerous because it is your protected escape route. If the battery fires there, you may not get out safely. Always charge behind a closed door that separates the battery from bedrooms.

3. Do not charge unattended or overnight

The London Fire Brigade and other services advise against overnight charging. Most lithium battery fires happen when nobody is nearby to respond quickly. If you go to bed or leave the house with the battery on charge, you lose the chance to act in the early stages.

A practical approach: plug the charger into a mechanical socket timer set to cut power after the expected charge time. Most e-bike batteries reach full charge in two to six hours - check your manual. A timer costs a few pounds and removes the need to remember to unplug.

Make sure there is a working smoke alarm in the same room or immediately outside the door where you charge. Test it monthly.

4. Store the battery correctly

Store lithium batteries at room temperature - broadly between 10°C and 25°C. Avoid garages that regularly exceed 35°C in summer, very cold outbuildings in winter, or anywhere that could freeze the cells.

For long-term storage, keep the battery at around 40-80% charge rather than fully topped up. A lithium cell stored at 100% for extended periods degrades faster and carries a higher risk if damaged.

If the battery has been in a crash, even a minor one, inspect it carefully before charging again. Internal cell damage can cause problems weeks after an impact with no visible sign on the casing.

5. Check for product recalls

There have been multiple recalls of e-bikes and e-scooters in the UK due to battery safety defects. Register your product with the manufacturer immediately after purchase so you receive recall notifications directly.

The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) maintains a product recall database at gov.uk. When buying second-hand, check the model there and ask the seller whether there are any outstanding recall notices before you hand over any money.

6. Recognise the warning signs

A battery that is about to fail often gives warning signs before it goes into thermal runaway. Stop charging and move away from the battery if you notice:

If you notice any of these, disconnect the charger if you can do so safely, move the battery outside if you can do so quickly, and call 999. Do not attempt to put out a lithium battery fire with water - it can make the situation significantly worse. Get everyone out and close doors behind you.

Call 999 immediately if: you see smoke, flames or sparks from the battery or charger; the battery swells suddenly; you smell burning and cannot identify the source quickly. Do not fight a lithium battery fire yourself. Close doors to slow the spread and get out.

When to call us
