How to use a cable reel safely

The basic rule is simple: always uncoil the cable fully before you plug anything in. Ignore that and a cable reel can overheat, melt its insulation, and start a fire before the fuse even flickers. There are a few other things worth knowing too, particularly around outdoor use and daisy-chaining.

Before you start. Inspect the reel before every use. Any cracked, cut, or severely kinked cable means the reel should not be used until repaired or replaced. A visual check takes thirty seconds and could save your life. If you are using the reel outdoors or near water, RCD protection is not optional.

1. Read the rating label on the drum

Every cable reel sold in the UK should carry a label showing the current rating when coiled and when fully extended. A common rating is 13A uncoiled / 4A coiled. That matters: a 2,000 W electric heater draws about 8.7A at 230 V. On a coiled reel rated at 4A, the coil will overheat long before the 13A fuse in the plug does anything useful.

If the label is missing or illegible, treat the reel as rated at 4A coiled until you can verify otherwise. Buying cheap reels with no visible rating is a false economy.

2. Fully uncoil the cable before plugging in

Pull every last metre off the drum. If you only need five metres for a particular job, you still need to trail the other ten metres in a pile on the floor rather than leave them wound on the reel. It looks untidy. It is far safer.

The reason is electromagnetic induction. Multiple loops of a current-carrying conductor act like a transformer core, generating heat in the centre of the coil. The thicker the cable, the slower it heats, but any coiled cable under load will get warmer than one that is straight. At high loads over time the insulation can melt and fuse together.

3. Inspect the cable along its full length

Run the cable through your hands as you uncoil it. You are looking for cuts, deep kinks, sections where the outer sheath has cracked, and any brown or melted areas that suggest it has overheated in the past. Finding any of these means one thing: the reel is out of service until repaired by someone who knows what they are doing, or scrapped.

Wrapping a cut with insulation tape is not a repair. It hides the damage and fools the next person who picks it up.

4. Check the total load before plugging in

Add up the wattages of every appliance you plan to connect. Divide by 230 to get the approximate current in amps. A 3,000 W generator load, for example, draws 13A, which is right at the limit of a standard 13A plug and cable. Adding anything else to that circuit would mean tripping the fuse at best, overheating the cable at worst.

Common high-wattage tools: angle grinders 800-2,000 W; heat guns 1,000-2,000 W; pressure washers 1,500-2,500 W; site kettles 2,000-3,000 W. These should always be on their own socket where possible.

5. Never plug one reel into another

Daisy-chaining cable reels (plugging the second reel into the first) creates extra resistance at the socket joint, which generates heat exactly where you do not want it. It also means the total cable length can cause significant volt drop, which affects some tools and battery chargers. One reel, one wall socket.

If you genuinely need more length, buy a longer reel. They are cheap compared to a house fire.

6. Use RCD protection for all outdoor work

Outdoors, a cable reel can run across a damp path, sit in a puddle, or get nicked by a lawnmower or strimmer. When the insulation is breached outside, current can pass through the ground, through you, and back through the earth. A 30 mA RCD trips in under 40 milliseconds, which is fast enough to prevent a fatality in most circumstances. A 13A fuse will not help you at all in that scenario.

If your outdoor socket is already protected by the RCD in your consumer unit, the reel is covered. If you are using an indoor socket and trailing the reel outside, fit a plug-in RCD adapter at the wall socket before the reel. They cost a few pounds and are available in any DIY shop.

Stop and call an electrician if: the reel has melted or scorched insulation anywhere along its length, if any socket on the reel is cracked or has loose contacts, if the plug is discoloured or the pins are corroded, or if the reel keeps tripping the RCD when connected to a particular appliance. That last one suggests a fault in the appliance, the reel, or both.

When to call us

If you find yourself relying on a cable reel for a particular spot all the time, that spot needs a proper installed socket. Running a reel through a doorway, under a carpet, or permanently in one position is not an acceptable long-term solution and can void your home insurance.
