1. Choose between a mains motor and a low-voltage system
Most domestic swing and sliding gate operators run on 230V AC mains. They are reliable, widely supported by service engineers and straightforward to wire with a standard radial circuit. Low-voltage DC motors (12V or 24V) exist and are sometimes paired with a solar charging panel so you avoid running cable underground altogether, but they tend to be slower and the battery maintenance adds ongoing cost.
For a drive-through driveway gate in a UK home, a mains-powered operator is almost always the right choice. The rest of this guide assumes a 230V AC installation.
2. Plan the cable route
Trace the route from the consumer unit to where the gate controller will sit. Note every section where cable must go underground (across a driveway or lawn), every section where it runs through a wall, and every surface section on a building exterior. Different sections need different cable types and different installation methods.
The controller unit is usually mounted on a post beside the gate, close enough to reach both gate leaves with short low-voltage cables for the motor connections and accessories (safety edges, keypads, intercoms). Confirm the final mounting position before you buy cable, because the length affects your voltage drop calculation.
3. Size the circuit and choose the protective device
A 6A MCB on a dedicated radial circuit covers most domestic gate motors comfortably. The running current is typically 1A to 3A; the start-up surge is higher but brief. Fit an RCBO (combined MCB and RCD) in the consumer unit rather than a plain MCB. An RCBO gives the gate circuit its own RCD protection at 30mA, which means a fault at the gate trips only that one breaker rather than knocking out every circuit on a shared RCD.
Cable is normally 2.5mm² twin and earth inside the building and 2.5mm² SWA for the outdoor and underground sections. If the run to the gate is long, check voltage drop using the BS 7671 Appendix 4 tables for the actual installed current before specifying 2.5mm².
4. Run the cable
Underground sections need SWA cable buried at 500mm depth under a driveway or 450mm under a lawn. Dig the trench, lay a 50mm bed of sand, run the cable, cover with another 50mm of sand, then lay cable warning tape before backfilling. Do not use unprotected twin and earth underground, even inside plastic conduit, because conduit joints fill with water and the insulation degrades.
Where the cable exits the building, seal the entry point with a proprietary cable entry seal or expanding foam rated for the purpose. This stops damp, insects and rodents tracking the cable back into the building.
Surface runs on exterior walls should be in UV-stable grey PVC conduit clipped at intervals specified by BS 7671 for the conduit size used. Avoid black conduit for exterior use: it absorbs heat and becomes brittle over time.
5. Fit the controller enclosure
Mount the controller on a post or wall near the gate at a height that keeps it accessible for setting adjustments but out of reach of small children. The enclosure must be IP65 at minimum; IP66 is better and the standard most installers specify outdoors in the UK. Terminate the incoming SWA with properly sized armoured cable glands: the outer armour braid must make contact with the earth conductor inside the gland.
Inside the enclosure, connect line, neutral and earth to the controller's incoming terminals, then follow the manufacturer's wiring diagram for the motor outputs, safety edge inputs, radio receiver power, keypad and any other accessories. Every connection should be made to the manufacturer's specified terminal, not to a generic terminal block, because the control circuits are low voltage and often polarity-sensitive.
6. Earth the gate frame
A metallic gate frame is exposed metalwork that a person can touch. Under BS 7671 Section 411, any simultaneously accessible exposed metalwork that could become live in a fault condition must be connected to the circuit protective conductor. Run a 4mm² green-yellow earth conductor from the controller enclosure earth terminal to the gate frame, terminated with a purpose-made earthing clamp bolted directly to bare metal (remove any paint at the bonding point). Do this for every gate leaf that has a motor connected to it.
7. Fix the warning sign
This is the part people forget, and it matters: BS EN 12453 (safety in use of power-operated pedestrian doorsets and gates) requires a warning sign on each leaf of the gate stating that it is electrically operated and that people should keep clear when it moves. The sign must be visible from both sides of the gate. Gate motor manufacturers usually supply the signs with the kit; if yours did not, buy them before the installation is considered complete.
A gate without the required warning signs is non-compliant. If someone is struck by the gate, the absence of signs will go against you in any civil claim.
8. Test and certify
Before the supply is energised, the electrician carries out dead tests: insulation resistance between conductors, polarity check on the new circuit, and continuity of the circuit protective conductor from the enclosure earth terminal back to the consumer unit. After energising: earth fault loop impedance test at the gate enclosure, RCD test at the consumer unit for the new RCBO, and a functional test of the gate through its full open and close cycle.
The electrician then issues an Electrical Installation Certificate covering the new circuit and notifies the work through their competent persons scheme. You receive a copy of the certificate, which you keep with your property paperwork.
