How to use Wago 221 lever connectors

Wago 221 connectors have largely replaced screw-block connectors in UK domestic work. They take solid, stranded and flexible conductors without a separate tool, grip firmly, and allow you to re-enter a joint later if needed. Choose the right pole count, strip to exactly 11 mm, and always house the connector in a proper enclosure - never leave it floating loose in a wall void.

Before you start. Confirm the circuit is isolated and dead before touching any cables. Wago 221 connectors can be installed in accessible positions (such as inside a WagoBox or junction box with a screwed cover) or maintenance-free enclosed positions. They must never be left loose inside a wall cavity or ceiling void without a proper enclosure - this breaches BS 7671 Regulation 526.3.

1. Choose the right pole count

Wago 221 connectors come in 2-pole (221-412), 3-pole (221-413) and 5-pole (221-415) versions. Count how many conductors you need to join. A simple cable joint in a lighting circuit typically needs the 3-pole to connect live, neutral and earth from two lengths of cable. A spur tap off a ring circuit usually calls for the 5-pole to join three cables.

The 221 series handles conductor sizes from 0.2 mm² up to 4 mm², covering virtually every conductor you will meet in domestic wiring: 1.0 mm², 1.5 mm², 2.5 mm² and 4 mm². All variants are rated at 32 A / 450 V.

2. Confirm the circuit is isolated and dead

Turn off the relevant circuit at the consumer unit and lock the breaker or remove the fuse if your board allows it. Test the conductors you are about to work on with an approved voltage tester - both between live and earth, and between live and neutral. Both readings should be zero. If either shows a reading, the circuit is not fully dead and you must not proceed.

3. Strip the conductor to 11 mm

The Wago 221 series requires exactly 11 mm of stripped conductor. Use cable strippers set to the correct conductor size. Too short and the lever will not grip the conductor properly; too long and bare copper will protrude from the back of the connector, creating a shock and short-circuit risk.

On twin and earth cable you will also need to sleeve the bare circuit protective conductor (earth) in green-and-yellow sleeving before it goes into the connector.

4. Open the lever and insert the conductor

Lift the orange lever on the relevant pole until it is upright (about 90 degrees). You will feel it click into the open position. With solid or stranded conductors, push the stripped end straight in until the copper stops against the internal stop and the conductor is visible through the transparent housing. With flexible or fine-stranded conductors, a small push with a flat-blade screwdriver on the orange lever helps seat the conductor fully.

5. Close the lever and check the grip

Press the orange lever down firmly. You should feel a definite click. Try pulling the conductor out by hand - with a correctly seated 2.5 mm² conductor, the grip is strong enough that you cannot pull it free without releasing the lever. If the conductor comes out without opening the lever, the insertion was not complete. Open, recheck the strip length and reinsert.

6. Verify polarity and core colours

With the connector closed, confirm that live (brown), neutral (blue) and earth (green-and-yellow) are in the correct poles. Looking at a 3-pole connector: it is common practice to use the first pole for live, middle for neutral, last for earth - but what matters is that the polarity is consistent at both ends of the circuit, not which physical pole each colour is in.

7. Fit the connector in a suitable enclosure

Wago 221 connectors must be enclosed. For a ceiling void, a surface-mount junction box with a screwed cover or a WagoBox maintenance enclosure screwed to a joist is the correct approach. For an in-wall junction, use a deep back box with a blank plate, positioned in the vertical or horizontal safe zone. Secure the enclosure so it cannot drop into the void.

Stop and call an electrician if: you find existing connectors floating loose inside a wall cavity or ceiling void without a junction box, conductor insulation is scorched or discoloured, the cables have rubber or cloth sheathing you do not recognise, or you are not certain which conductor is which after isolation.

When to call us

Joining cables in a ceiling void or wall looks simple but the rules around enclosures, safe zones and earthing mean it is easy to create a concealed fault. For anything beyond a like-for-like swap in an accessible position, call - small Sandwich jobs are £10 per 10 minutes.
