1. Read the symptom before you do anything
Not everything that trips a breaker is a short circuit. Understanding the symptom narrows the search considerably.
- MCB trips immediately on reset, often with an audible click or flash: this is a short circuit (or a severe earth fault). The resistance between two conductors is near zero.
- MCB trips after a delay of a few seconds to a few minutes: this is most likely an overload - too much current for the rating of the circuit. Switch off some appliances.
- RCD trips instead of the MCB: this points to a leakage to earth rather than a direct short. The guide on fault-finding a tripping RCD covers that separately.
A short circuit can be in a plug-in appliance, in a fixed accessory (socket, switch, light fitting), in a junction box, or in the cable itself.
2. Unplug every appliance and try to reset
Go around the affected circuit and unplug every appliance: kettles, phone chargers, lamps, televisions, anything on a plug. Then try to reset the MCB.
If the MCB now holds, the fault is in one of the appliances you unplugged. Plug them back in one at a time, resetting the breaker after each one, until you find the culprit. It goes straight in the bin - do not try to fix a faulty appliance unless you know what you are doing.
If the MCB still trips with every appliance removed, the fault is in the fixed wiring: the sockets, switches, light fittings, junction boxes, or the cables themselves.
3. Isolate the circuit and confirm dead
Switch the MCB off. Test at a socket on that circuit with your voltage tester: no voltage between line and neutral, no voltage between line and earth. The circuit is dead. Now you can unscrew accessories safely.
Do this test even if the MCB is in the tripped position. A tripped MCB disconnects the output, but test anyway as a habit - particularly in older homes where circuit identification is unreliable.
4. Use the half-and-half split method
This is the most efficient way to narrow down a fault in a long circuit. The principle is simple: disconnect the circuit at its mid-point, reset the breaker, and see which half the fault is in.
For a socket ring, the mid-point is usually a socket roughly in the middle of the ring. Open it up, disconnect the cables from the terminals, and keep them separate so they cannot touch. Try resetting the MCB. If it trips, the fault is in the half that is still connected. If it holds, the fault is in the half you disconnected.
For a radial socket or lighting circuit, find a junction box, spur takeoff or light fitting roughly halfway along and disconnect there. The logic is the same.
Keep halving the suspect section until you narrow it to one accessory or one cable run. This takes patience but is much faster than opening every socket one by one.
5. Inspect the accessories in the suspect section
Once you have a suspect section, open every socket, switch or light fitting in it and look carefully inside each back box.
Common causes of a short circuit in a fixed accessory:
- A conductor that has worked loose and is bridging between the line and neutral terminals.
- A conductor whose insulation was nicked during installation, exposing bare copper that can touch another conductor.
- Water ingress in an outdoor or bathroom accessory, allowing a conductive path between terminals.
- A wire that was stripped too long and has copper sticking out beyond the terminal.
- A screw that has pushed through and is touching a conductor behind the plate.
Look carefully with a torch. A short circuit that has arced will often leave a small brown or black mark near the fault.
6. Test resistance with a multimeter
If the visual inspection does not find anything obvious, use a multimeter to confirm where the short is. With the circuit isolated at the consumer unit and all accessories accessible (or disconnected at the mid-point), set the multimeter to the 200 Ω resistance range.
Measure between the line and neutral conductors at the consumer unit end of the suspect section. A healthy circuit with all appliances removed reads open-circuit (very high or OL on the display). A short reads near 0 Ω - typically less than 1 Ω.
Measure between line and earth, and between neutral and earth, in the same way. Any reading close to 0 Ω between conductors that should be separate points to the location of the fault.
You can also use the multimeter on the continuity (buzzer) setting: a short circuit will buzz continuously between the conductors that are shorting together.
