How to install a 600x600mm LED ceiling panel light

LED panels have moved well beyond the office. A 600x600mm CCT panel in a kitchen, garage or home office gives you clean, even light at roughly a third of the running cost of old fluorescent tubes. The wiring is no more complex than fitting a standard ceiling rose, as long as you get the void depth right and isolate the circuit properly first.

Before you start. Switch off the lighting circuit MCB at the consumer unit, not just the light switch at the wall. Confirm dead with an approved two-pole voltage tester at the existing fitting before cutting into the ceiling or touching any conductor. If you do not know which MCB feeds the room you are working in, switch them off one at a time and test each time until you find the right one.

1. Isolate the circuit and gather your tools

Turn off the correct lighting circuit MCB, tape the handle and test dead at the existing fitting location. You will need: a tape measure, pencil, the manufacturer's cutting template (usually taped inside the panel box), a jigsaw or pad saw for plasterboard ceilings, insulated screwdrivers, wire strippers and a set of Wago connectors or a 5-way connector block for joining the conductors.

If you are installing into a suspended tile grid ceiling, ignore the cutting tools entirely. The panel drops straight into a standard 600x600mm grid tile space once you have removed the existing tile. Simple.

2. Check the ceiling void depth

Reach up through the existing fitting hole, or drill a 10mm inspection hole near where the panel will sit, and use a torch to check the void. Most recessed 600x600mm LED panels need between 30mm and 50mm of void behind the ceiling surface for the driver unit to sit comfortably. If you are working in a ground-floor kitchen with a solid concrete soffit above, or a very shallow timber floor void, measure before you buy.

If the void is shallower than 30mm, buy a surface-mount panel instead. The surface-mount version has a thin aluminium frame that sits proud of the ceiling by about 20mm. Not as flush, but it works in tight spaces and no cutting is needed beyond a small hole for the cable to pass through.

3. Mark and cut the aperture

Use the template provided with the panel to mark the cut-out position on the ceiling. Double-check the position avoids joists by using a joist detector or by probing with a bradawl. Cut along the marked line with a jigsaw or pad saw. Keep your strokes slow and steady near the corners - plasterboard cracks from rushed cuts and then you have a visible gap around the bezel.

Test-fit the bezel frame into the aperture before you touch any wiring. It should sit flush with a consistent gap of about 1 to 2mm around the outside. Too tight? Enlarge the aperture slightly. Too loose? The bezel will not grip and the panel will sag over time.

4. Bring the cable through

Feed the existing lighting circuit cable down through the aperture, or route a new cable from the junction box or ceiling rose if you are moving the fitting position. There should be enough flex or cable to work with comfortably below the ceiling surface without pulling or straining.

If the cable is very short or there is any sign of damage to the insulation (cracking, discolouration or scorch marks), extend it with a joint housing inside the void rather than straining a short cable to reach the connector block. A Wago Wagobox is the tidiest way to make a maintenance-accessible joint in a ceiling void.

5. Wire up the driver

The LED panel comes with a short flex tailed from the driver unit. The driver is either integral to the panel or supplied as a separate brick that sits in the ceiling void. Connect the driver flex to the lighting circuit conductors using your connectors:

If the existing wiring uses old UK colours (red for live, black for neutral, bare copper for earth), connect red to brown (driver live), black to blue (driver neutral), and sleeve the bare copper in green-and-yellow before connecting it to the earth. Never re-use old pre-2004 wire colours without sleeving or labelling them correctly.

Tuck the driver up into the void so it is not resting on the back of the panel. If the driver is integral, this step is not needed.

6. Fit the panel and restore power

Clip the LED panel into the bezel frame following the manufacturer's instructions. Most 4lite CCT panels use four spring-loaded clips that you push up through the frame, then release so they grip the ceiling surface from above. Do not force the panel - if one corner does not clip, check that the bezel is correctly seated and the void is deep enough for the clip to travel.

Return to the consumer unit and switch the lighting MCB back on. The panel should illuminate immediately. CCT panels change colour temperature by cycling the switch: off, then on again within one second. Each cycle steps through warm white (around 3000K), neutral white (4000K) and cool daylight (6000K). Pick the one that suits the room and leave it there.

Stop and call an electrician if: the MCB trips when you restore power (likely a wiring error in the connector block), the panel flickers continuously (driver fault or loose connection), you find no earth conductor in the ceiling void (older properties sometimes have earthed-only wiring that needs upgrading), or the void contains old rubber or cloth-sheathed wiring that should not be disturbed.

When to call us

A like-for-like LED panel swap on an existing circuit is non-notifiable work. The moment it becomes a new circuit run from the consumer unit, or you discover the ceiling void has no earth, call.
