What to expect from an Indra Smart Pro EV charger installation (UK)

Indra is a British company from Daventry, Northamptonshire, making one of the few home chargers with genuine V2G (vehicle-to-grid) capability. The Smart Pro also carries an internal Type A RCD with DC fault detection, which simplifies the RCBO specification. This guide covers what the installation involves from site survey to first test charge.

This is a notifiable electrical installation. Running a new circuit from the consumer unit is Part P notifiable work in England and Wales. It must be carried out by, or supervised by, a registered electrician. This guide explains what the work involves so you can ask the right questions and check the job has been done correctly.

1. Site survey and EV compatibility check

Before ordering an Indra Smart Pro, it is worth confirming two things. First, that the installation is electrically straightforward. Second, if V2G is the reason you chose Indra, that your EV actually supports it.

Your installer will check the consumer unit for a spare way, assess the incoming supply fuse rating, confirm the earthing arrangement and walk the proposed cable route. Most UK domestic installations are straightforward -- but a full board or an unusually long cable route can affect cost.

For V2G, check the Indra compatibility list. As of 2026, V2G works with CHAdeMO-equipped Nissan Leafs and is expanding to CCS Combo 2 capable vehicles. A charger without V2G (the standard Smart Pro) is identical from an installation standpoint but lacks the bidirectional hardware.

2. Run the dedicated circuit

The Indra Smart Pro draws up to 32A at 7.4kW. The IET Code of Practice for EV Charging requires a dedicated radial circuit -- it cannot share a circuit with sockets, lighting or any other load.

Standard cable sizing is 6mm² twin and earth for most domestic routes. A voltage drop calculation under BS 7671 determines whether 10mm² is needed for longer runs or cables running through insulation. The cable must be clipped at regular intervals or run in conduit, and any outdoor section must be UV-resistant or run in conduit.

3. Mount the Indra Smart Pro

The Smart Pro is wall-mounted and IP54 rated, suitable for outdoor locations such as a garage wall or under a canopy. Fix the backplate to a solid surface -- brick, blockwork or timber stud -- using appropriate fixings for the wall type.

The standard mounting height is 750mm to 1200mm to the centre of the unit. For tethered units, make sure the cable reaches your car's charge port without pulling tight across the bodywork.

4. Wire to the dedicated RCBO at the consumer unit

Inside the Indra Smart Pro, live, neutral and earth conductors connect to clearly labelled terminals. The terminal block is designed for 6mm² or 10mm² conductors -- use ferrules where recommended in the installation manual.

At the consumer unit, fit a 32A Type A RCBO for the dedicated EV circuit. The Indra Smart Pro contains an internal Type A RCD circuit with 6mA DC fault current detection. This satisfies the IET Code of Practice for EV Charging requirement on PME (TN-C-S) supplies -- the charger's own electronics interrupt DC fault currents before they can compromise the upstream RCD. A Type B RCBO is not required.

5. Earth and N-PE bonding checks

Confirm the circuit earth conductor is intact and correctly terminated at both ends. If the supply is PME (the most common arrangement in UK homes), the Indra's internal protection means no additional N-PE bonding is required at the charger -- but the earth terminal inside the unit must still be connected.

Where the supply is TT earthed (common in rural properties served by overhead lines), an earth electrode and appropriate RCD protection may be needed. Your installer will confirm the earthing arrangement before the installation starts.

6. Commission and pair the charger

Restore power at the consumer unit. Download the Indra app, scan the QR code on the Smart Pro and follow the on-screen steps to connect the charger to your home Wi-Fi.

Once paired, the app lets you set charging schedules, view session history, configure solar divert (if a CT clamp is fitted) and, on V2G units, manage discharging back to the grid or to house loads. Run a test charge to confirm the session starts, the app reports correctly and the RCBO does not trip during charging.

Stop and call an electrician if: the RCBO trips immediately on first use, the Smart Pro shows a persistent error code after commissioning, the unit feels warm to the touch during charging, or you did not receive an Electrical Installation Certificate when the job was finished. Uncertified EV charger work can also affect OZEV grant eligibility.
