1. Site survey and consumer unit check
The first job is to confirm the installation is straightforward. Your installer will check:
- That the consumer unit has a spare way for the dedicated RCBO. If the board is full, a new consumer unit or a secondary board may be needed.
- The incoming supply fuse rating. Most UK homes have a 60A or 80A main fuse. Charging at 32A on top of normal household loads should stay within this, but a load calculation confirms it.
- The earthing arrangement -- TN-C-S (PME), TN-S or TT. This used to matter a great deal for EV charger RCBO selection, but the Wallbox Pulsar Max includes internal DC fault detection so the earthing type does not change the RCBO specification.
- The proposed cable route from the consumer unit to the charger location, noting length, whether the cable passes through thermal insulation, and how it will be protected outdoors.
2. Run the dedicated circuit cable
The Wallbox Pulsar Max at full 7.4kW draws 32A continuously. The IET Code of Practice for EV Charging requires a dedicated radial circuit for the charger -- it must not share a circuit with anything else.
Standard cable for most domestic routes is 6mm² twin and earth. If the run is long (over roughly 20 metres) or the cable passes through thermal insulation for a significant distance, a 10mm² cable may be needed to keep voltage drop within the 3% limit set by BS 7671.
Outdoors, the cable should be run in UV-resistant conduit or as steel wire armoured (SWA) cable where it could be damaged. Underground routes need a minimum cover depth of 500mm in conduit or 600mm for SWA direct-buried.
3. Mount the Wallbox Pulsar Max
The Pulsar Max is designed for wall mounting. Fix the backplate to a solid wall or timber stud using the supplied fixings. The standard mounting height is roughly 750mm to 1200mm to the centre of the unit, giving comfortable access to the cable or socket.
If mounting on a garage wall with no direct stud access, use appropriate fixings for the wall type. The unit is IP54 rated for outdoor use but avoid positions where it will be directly sprayed with a hosepipe or in a splash zone.
Feed the supply cable through the cable entry gland before securing the backplate -- retrofitting the cable afterwards is awkward.
4. Wire and terminate the supply
Connect the brown (live) conductor to the L terminal, blue (neutral) to N, and the green-yellow earth to the earth terminal. The Wallbox Pulsar Max uses push-in or screw terminals depending on the variant -- check the installation manual for the specific unit.
Ensure the earth conductor is connected firmly. The enclosure should be bonded to earth via the circuit earth conductor -- do not rely on a separate bonding clamp.
5. Fit the RCBO at the consumer unit
The Wallbox Pulsar Max contains an internal DC fault detection board that monitors the charging output for a DC leakage component. This meets the requirement in the IET Code of Practice for EV Charging that DC fault currents above 6mA are interrupted before they can cause problems with a standard RCD upstream.
As a result, a 32A Type A RCBO at the consumer unit is the correct protection for this charger on a PME (TN-C-S) supply. A Type B RCBO would also meet the requirement but is significantly more expensive and adds no benefit with this unit.
Fit the RCBO, label the way in the consumer unit ("EV charger"), and record the circuit details on the distribution board schedule.
6. Commission via the Wallbox app
Restore power at the consumer unit. The Wallbox Pulsar Max's LED ring will cycle through its startup sequence.
- Download the Wallbox app on your phone and create an account.
- Scan the QR code on the charger label. The app will detect the unit and step you through Wi-Fi pairing.
- Connect the charger to your home Wi-Fi. The app confirms when the connection is live.
- Set a charging schedule if you want to charge overnight on a cheap tariff -- the app lets you set a fixed window or link to a smart tariff if your energy supplier supports it.
- Plug in an EV, check that charging starts within 30 seconds and confirm the app shows the correct session data.
