Doorbell not working: how to fault-find a wired bell

A doorbell that has gone silent is usually a faulty push button or a length of corroded bell wire - both easy to check and cheap to fix. Work through this systematically and you will know within 20 minutes whether it is a £5 button, a new transformer, or something more involved.

Before you start. The bell wire side of a doorbell system runs at low voltage (8-16V AC) and is safe to handle. The mains supply to the transformer is 230V and must not be touched. If you need to check whether the transformer is receiving mains power, turn the circuit off at the consumer unit first. Never open the mains terminal box on the transformer while the supply is live.

1. Identify your doorbell type

This guide is for wired doorbells - a system with a transformer, thin bell wire running through the house, a push button at the door, and a chime or buzzer unit inside. The transformer is usually a small metal or plastic box mounted on a joist in the loft, in a cupboard, or on an internal wall. It converts 230V mains to 8-16V AC for the bell circuit.

If your doorbell is wireless - battery button, plug-in or battery chime - the fault-finding process is simpler: replace the batteries in both units first, then try re-pairing them (consult the instruction leaflet).

2. Test the push button first

The push button is the most common failure point. It sits outside exposed to weather and the contacts corrode over time. Testing it takes less than a minute.

Unscrew the button from the door surround (usually two screws) and ease it away. You will see two thin bell wires connected to two terminals. Disconnect both wires, then briefly touch the bare ends together. If the chime sounds inside the house, the button is faulty - the rest of the system is working. Replace the button with a like-for-like unit from any hardware shop.

If touching the wires together does nothing, the fault is somewhere else - move on.

3. Check the transformer voltage

Find the chime unit inside the house. It will have two thin bell wires connected to a terminal block marked something like "Trans", "AC", or simply "+" and "-". Set a multimeter to AC volts (20V range) and place a probe on each terminal while the transformer is powered.

You should read 8V, 12V or 16V AC depending on your transformer's rating. Check the label on your transformer to confirm the expected output.

4. Test the chime unit

If you have confirmed the correct voltage at the chime terminals but pressing the button (or touching the wires) does not make it sound, the chime mechanism has failed. Inside the chime there is usually a solenoid that drives a hammer against one or two metal bars. Solenoids can fail open (no current path) or the hammer can seize.

A quick bypass test: use a short piece of bell wire to connect the two bell wire terminals on the chime directly together (simulating the button press). If the chime sounds, the wiring between button and chime has a break in it. If it does not, the chime has failed and needs replacing.

Replacement chimes are widely available and simple to swap - it is just two bell wire terminals and the mains plug or wire if the chime is mains-fed.

5. Trace the bell wire

Bell wire is thin, usually white or grey, and often stapled along skirting boards, through the loft, or around door frames. A break can occur anywhere - a staple driven through it, a cable pinched in a door frame, or a section that has been painted over and then cracked.

Walk the route of the bell wire from the button, through the house, to the chime and then to the transformer. Look for any section that has been disturbed, decorated over, or that passes through a door hinge rebate. A continuity tester or multimeter on resistance mode between the two ends of the wire will confirm whether it is intact - a short length of bell wire used as a temporary bypass is another way to isolate which section has the fault.

6. Check the transformer

If there is no voltage at the chime terminals, the transformer may have failed. First confirm it is getting mains power: switch off the circuit at the consumer unit, open the mains connection safely, and check the fuse or MCB. Many older doorbell transformers are wired from the lighting circuit or via a fused connection unit - confirm that fuse is intact.

If mains power is present but the transformer output is zero, the transformer has failed. Replace it with one of the same voltage rating - most UK doorbells use a 12V or 8V transformer at 1 VA. Reconnecting the mains supply to a new transformer is notifiable work under Part P in England, so ask an electrician to do that part.

Stop and call an electrician if: you need to disconnect or reconnect the mains side of the doorbell transformer; if you cannot locate the transformer; if the bell wiring runs through the consumer unit; or if this is a fire alarm system rather than a simple doorbell (fire alarm work is regulated separately and must be carried out by a competent person).
