Growatt home battery installation: what the job involves

Growatt's SPH hybrid inverter and GBLI battery system replaces your existing string inverter and adds storage in one job. The DC connections to the solar array, the AC circuit to the consumer unit, and the export and backup settings all need a registered electrician. Knowing what a correct installation looks like helps you ask the right questions and check the paperwork when the job is done.

This is not a DIY job. The AC supply circuit, DC battery and solar connections, and export control settings are notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations. They must be designed, installed, tested and certified by a registered electrician. Growatt require an approved installer for the product warranty to remain valid. The steps below explain what a correct installation looks like so you can verify the work.

1. Surveying the site and sizing the system

The Growatt SPH (Solar & Storage Hybrid) inverter replaces a standard string inverter. It handles DC input from the solar panels via its MPPTs, manages DC charging and discharging of the GBLI lithium battery, and exports AC power to the household and grid. Because all the power conversion happens inside the SPH inverter, there is no separate battery inverter to install alongside an existing solar unit.

The installer checks the existing solar array configuration, panel voltage and current figures from the data plates, and whether the SPH range covers those parameters. The consumer unit is inspected for spare ways and the main supply fuse rating is noted. GBLI battery capacity is sized based on daily consumption and how much of that the solar array can realistically cover through the year.

2. Mounting the hybrid inverter and battery modules

The SPH inverter wall-mounts on a bracket, typically in a garage or outbuilding close to the existing solar cable entry point. The GBLI battery modules are floor- or wall-mounted on a purpose-built frame. The installer confirms the fixings are appropriate for the masonry, that the combined weight of battery modules is within the floor load capacity, and that the location temperature stays within Growatt's specified operating range throughout the year.

Cable entry points for the DC strings, battery cables and AC connection are planned before the units go up, so drilling through the wall or soffits can be done cleanly before mounting.

3. Wiring the DC connections

DC cables from the solar string or strings route to the MPPT inputs on the SPH inverter. A separate DC circuit, sized to Growatt's specification in the installation manual, connects the GBLI battery to the inverter's battery terminals. The installer measures open-circuit voltage from the array before connecting to the inverter, verifies polarity at every connector, and torques all terminals to the values in the manual.

The GBLI modules are connected together in series or parallel depending on the configuration, and the high-voltage battery circuit is isolated until the AC and earthing checks are complete.

4. Running the AC supply cable to the consumer unit

The SPH inverter's AC output connects via a dedicated circuit to the consumer unit. Twin-and-earth cable is sized for the inverter's rated AC output current and the route length, keeping volt drop within the BS 7671 Regulation 525 limit. An RCBO or MCB at the consumer unit protects the circuit and is sized to match the cable and the inverter's rated current. Polarity and earth continuity are verified before the board cover goes back on, and the schedule is updated to label the new circuit.

5. Fitting and orienting the CT clamp

A CT clamp on the grid import conductor tells the inverter whether the household is importing or exporting power. The SPH uses this reading to decide whether to charge the battery from surplus solar, discharge it to reduce import, or export surplus. Fitting the clamp the wrong way around inverts the readings: the system charges from the grid when it should discharge and exports when it should store.

The installer checks the import/export reading in the ShinePhone app immediately after fitting and before commissioning proceeds, confirming the value makes sense for the time of day and any load on at that moment.

6. Commissioning on ShinePhone and notifying Part P and DNO

With all connections complete and dead tests passed, the installer powers up the system and works through the ShinePhone commissioning sequence. Export limits are set to comply with any DNO restriction. Charge and discharge schedules are configured for the household's energy tariff, and backup priority settings are confirmed if EPS wiring has been included.

The installation is notified through the installer's Part P competent person scheme and you receive an Electrical Installation Certificate. DNO notification follows: G98 self-certification for systems exporting up to 3.68 kW per phase, notified within 28 days of commissioning. Systems above that threshold, or on a three-phase supply, need G99 pre-approval before work starts. Keep the EIC and DNO letter with your property documents.

Stop and call an electrician if: the system shows a persistent fault code after commissioning, the RCBO on the supply circuit trips repeatedly, CT clamp readings appear to be inverted in the ShinePhone app, EPS backup mode does not supply the house correctly during a simulated grid failure, or you did not receive an Electrical Installation Certificate after the work was completed.
