How to use Wago 222 connectors

The Wago 222 compact lever connector is one of the most common push-in connectors found in UK junction boxes and ceiling roses. Getting the lever, strip length and insertion right takes a few seconds once you know how. And as John Ward's tear-down test showed, the unbranded copies that look identical are not even close inside.

Before you start. Always isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before working on any connection. Confirm dead with an approved voltage tester. Use only connectors certified to BS EN 60998 or the equivalent IEC standard for mains wiring. If the cable in the junction box shows signs of overheating - darkened insulation, a burning smell, or conductors that move freely at old terminals - stop and call a qualified electrician before disturbing anything further.

1. Choose the right 222 variant

The Wago 222 series comes in three port counts:

Count the conductors before opening the packaging. If you need to join four conductors, two 3-way connectors (one per polarity pair) will work cleanly. A 5-way with two empty ports is acceptable - an empty port poses no risk provided the lever stays closed.

2. Strip the conductor to the right length

The strip length for Wago 222 connectors is 10 to 11 mm. Most 222 connectors have a small gauge symbol or a strip length marker on the housing. Use a proper wire stripper set to the conductor size rather than a knife, particularly on the small 1.0 mm and 1.5 mm conductors in lighting cables where nicking a strand makes the connection less reliable.

Solid conductors from twin-and-earth cable and fine-stranded conductors both seat correctly, but do not try to insert a flexible (multistrand) conductor without first twisting the strands together firmly. Loose strands fold back outside the entry hole and the connection will fail the tug test.

3. Open the lever

Each port on a Wago 222 has its own small grey lever. Lift the lever on the port you are about to load - it pivots back through roughly 90 degrees and stays open, exposing the conductor entry hole. You do not need to apply much force; if the lever feels stiff on a new connector, warm conditions usually help.

Do not try to insert a conductor into a closed port. Forcing a wire past the spring with the lever down risks bending the contact and the connection will be unreliable.

4. Insert the conductor fully

Push the stripped end of the conductor straight into the entry hole in a single smooth movement. Push until the conductor stops against the back wall of the housing - the full stripped length should disappear inside the connector with no bare copper showing outside. If the conductor stops short, check the strip length and try again; a 9 mm strip on a connector requiring 11 mm will not reach the contact properly.

5. Close the lever

Press the lever back down until it sits flat and flush with the housing. The spring contact inside grips the conductor as the lever closes. You should feel slight resistance as the lever seats - not a hard click like a Wago 221, but a definite point where the lever locks closed. A lever that springs back open has not engaged fully; check the conductor is seated correctly and try again.

6. Carry out a tug test on every conductor

Before closing the junction box lid, pull each conductor firmly and steadily. A properly seated conductor in a genuine Wago 222 will not come free. Any that pull out must be reseated: open the lever, push the conductor fully home, and close again.

John Ward's video makes the difference clear: genuine 222 connectors resist the pull test with authority, while unbranded copies release conductors at much lower forces. For mains wiring, the tug test is not optional - it is the only check you can make before closing the box.

Stop and call an electrician if: you find burnt or darkened insulation inside the junction box, smell burning from the conductors, find a conductor that pulls free from an existing connection even before you disturb it, or see any sign that a previous connection has overheated. These are not problems a new connector fixes - they point to a fault in the circuit that needs proper fault-finding first.
