How to replace a fan oven element (UK)

A failed oven element is one of the more satisfying DIY repairs. The part costs £15 to £40, the job takes under an hour, and an oven that would otherwise be scrapped works perfectly again. The electrical side is straightforward: isolate at the double-pole switch, confirm dead before reaching inside, and keep a photo of the connections before you touch them.

Before you start. Turn off the double-pole cooker isolator switch on the wall near the cooker, or unplug the appliance if it has a 13A plug. Wait for the oven to cool completely - ovens hold heat for a long time. Confirm there is no power with a voltage tester at the terminal block inside the oven before touching any wiring. If the cooker has no accessible isolator switch and is wired directly into the wall without a plug, call a qualified electrician to disconnect it safely.

1. Confirm the element has failed

The typical symptom is an oven that heats slowly or barely at all on the fan setting, whilst the fan motor itself still runs normally. Sometimes only one heat function stops - fan heat works but the top grill does not, for example - because ovens have separate elements for different modes.

A multimeter set to resistance (ohms) across the two element terminals gives a definitive diagnosis. A working element shows somewhere between 20 and 80 ohms depending on its wattage. A reading of open circuit (infinite resistance or OL) means the element wire has burnt through and needs replacing. A shorted element reads near zero ohms and will blow the MCB rather than just stop heating.

2. Isolate at the mains

The cooker isolator is the double-pole switch, usually with a red neon indicator, mounted on the kitchen wall or unit beside the cooker. Switching this off disconnects both line and neutral to the cooker. Do not rely on just turning the oven dial to off - the internal switching is not sufficient for safe working.

Range cookers and built-in ovens are most commonly hard-wired via a cooker connection unit. If the oven is an older freestanding model with a 13A plug at the back, unplug it from the socket. Wait until the oven cavity is completely cool - typically 30 minutes after use - before proceeding. Confirm dead with a voltage tester at the oven's terminal block: nothing on both line and neutral.

3. Find and order the correct replacement element

Open the oven door and look along the inside of the door frame, usually the left or right edge, for the rating plate. This carries the make, model number, voltage (230V on UK mains) and power rating. Write down the model number exactly as shown.

Do not estimate by the physical shape of the element: the wattage must match the original, as a higher-wattage element will overheat the oven and may trip the MCB.

4. Access the element

The fan oven element is a circular loop mounted in the back wall of the oven cavity, surrounding the fan blade. To reach it, remove the back panel: undo the two or four Phillips-head screws, ease the panel forward - it usually has a hook or ledge at the top that releases once the screws are out - and set it aside.

The element is now visible. Its two terminals pass through holes in the rear wall of the oven body and connect to the wiring behind.

5. Disconnect and remove the old element

Take a clear, well-lit photograph of the connections before touching them. The element will have spade connectors (flat blade) or bullet connectors. Pull each one off the terminals steadily - they can be tight if they have baked on over years of use. If they will not pull free by hand, use insulated pliers and pull straight, not at an angle.

Once disconnected, undo the screws that fix the element to the oven back wall. The element will then come free through the cavity. If the terminals are reluctant to clear the holes in the oven wall, try rotating the element slightly as you pull.

6. Fit the new element

Offer the new element into the oven cavity. Thread its terminals through the same holes in the oven back wall. Align the element, fit the fixing screws and tighten evenly. Reconnect the spade or bullet connectors to the terminals, checking against your earlier photograph that each one goes to the correct terminal - swapping the connections usually does no harm on a simple resistive element, but getting it wrong on some ovens with separate heat zones can cause the wrong function to work.

Refit the back panel: engage the top hook or ledge first, then fit and tighten the screws. Check the panel sits flush without gaps around the edges.

7. Restore power and test

Switch the cooker isolator back on. Set the oven to fan-assisted heat at around 180°C and run it. For the first few minutes there will be a smell and possibly light smoke: this is the protective manufacturing coating on the new element burning off. Ventilate the kitchen and let it run through - it clears within five minutes.

After ten minutes the oven should reach the set temperature and the smell should be gone. If the MCB or RCD trips immediately on switching the cooker back on, switch off and recheck the terminal connections: a loose spade connector touching the oven body can cause an earth fault that trips the RCD.

Stop and call an electrician if: the RCD or MCB trips as soon as power is restored (even after rechecking connections), there is scorching or melting around the terminal area inside the oven body, the supply cable or cooker connection unit shows any signs of damage, or you cannot locate or operate the cooker isolator switch.
