Worth watching before your installation day so the process makes sense as it unfolds.
1. Consumer unit assessment
The electrician's first job is to assess whether the consumer unit can support the new circuit. They will check that a spare way exists (or that an existing circuit can be moved to free one up), confirm the main fuse rating, and measure the available capacity against your existing load. In most UK homes a 100A service fuse gives enough headroom for a 32A charger alongside normal household use.
If the board is old or the tails are undersized, the assessment will flag this before any work starts. It is far better to know early than to discover a problem halfway through.
2. Cable route planning
The Zura needs a dedicated 32A radial circuit run in cable sized for the route. For most installations that means 6mm² twin and earth in conduit along an outside wall, or 10mm² if the run is long, grouped with other cables, or clipped through insulation. The electrician will agree the route with you before fixing anything.
External cable runs should be in UV-resistant conduit fixed with saddle clips at the correct spacings. If the route crosses the house wall through a cavity, a suitable sleeved gland keeps weather out and insulation intact.
3. Open PEN fault protection
This is the step many homeowners have not heard of but is legally required under BS 7671 Section 722 for every new EV charger on a PME (TN-C-S) earthing supply, which covers the vast majority of UK homes.
On a PME supply, the combined neutral and earth (PEN) conductor in the street network is shared. If this conductor breaks, the earth in your home can rise to a dangerous voltage relative to true earth. An EV connected to a metal charger becomes a path through which that voltage can discharge. The open PEN protection in the Rolec Zura monitors the supply earthing continuously and disconnects the charger if the earthing becomes unsafe. It is built into the unit, so no separate device is needed.
4. Fitting the 32A RCBO
A dedicated RCBO (residual current breaker with overcurrent protection) is clipped into the consumer unit for the EV circuit. EV chargers that include a Type B RCD internally can use a standard Type A RCBO at the board. The Rolec Zura includes internal DC fault detection, so a Type A RCBO at the board is correct for this charger.
The RCBO is wired: line from the busbar, neutral to the combined neutral bar, and the circuit conductors out to the charger.
5. Mounting and connecting the Zura
The Zura enclosure is fixed to the wall at a suitable height (typically 0.75 m to 1.2 m to the cable entry). The supply cable is routed through the gland at the base of the unit. Inside, line, neutral and earth connect to labelled terminals. The earth monitoring relay wires are factory-fitted.
The Type 2 socket or tethered cable (depending on which Zura variant you ordered) is already integrated into the front panel. No wiring to the socket is required by the installer.
6. Solar CT clamp (if applicable)
If you have solar panels, the electrician can fit a CT (current transformer) clamp around the grid import conductor at the consumer unit. A thin signal cable runs from the CT clamp to the CT input port on the Zura. Once the myRolec app is configured for solar mode, the charger monitors surplus generation and increases or decreases the charge rate accordingly, so any energy that would otherwise be exported to the grid at a low rate goes into your car instead.
7. Commission and test
With all wiring complete, the electrician will carry out the BS 7671 tests: continuity of the protective conductor, insulation resistance, polarity, and earth fault loop impedance. The RCBO is tested with an RCD trip-time meter. A test charge session confirms the charger communicates correctly.
The myRolec app is set up during commissioning. You can set scheduled charging windows (to take advantage of off-peak tariffs such as Octopus Go), monitor energy usage, and receive alerts if something goes wrong.
