Helpful video reference. We use Matt O'Dell's UK live stream "Swimming Pool Electrical Fault Finding with U.K. Electrician Matt" as the video reference here. Matt is a UK-based electrician who works through a real swimming pool electrical fault on site, demonstrating systematic isolation and testing in a Section 702 special location. He gets the UK-specific requirements right - 30 mA RCD protection, supplementary bonding checks, and working from the consumer unit outward rather than diving straight in at the equipment.
1. Understand that this is a Section 702 special location
Before touching anything, it helps to know what you are dealing with. BS 7671 Section 702 defines three zones around a swimming pool:
- Zone 0 is inside the pool basin itself.
- Zone 1 extends 2 metres horizontally from the pool edge and up to 2.5 metres above water level (or 0.1 metres above the floor, whichever is greater).
- Zone 2 extends a further 1.5 metres beyond Zone 1.
Socket outlets, switches, and consumer units must not be installed in Zone 0 or Zone 1. Zone 2 allows limited equipment. In practice this means controls and connections are in a plant room or behind a door, not in the open poolside area. If you find socket outlets near the pool surround, they should not be there.
2. Check the consumer unit or pool sub-board
Locate where the pool circuits are fed from. In many domestic installations this is a dedicated weatherproof sub-board mounted in a pool plant room or equipment cupboard. In others the pool circuits are fed directly from the main house consumer unit.
Look at every MCB, RCBO and RCD in the panel. Any device sitting between ON and OFF has tripped. Note the circuit label for anything tripped, and do not reset it until you know why it tripped. If you find a rewireable fuse holder or an unlabelled board, stop here and call an electrician.
3. Test the RCD protecting pool circuits
Every circuit serving a swimming pool must be protected by a 30 mA RCD under BS 7671 Section 702. If you find one, test it with the test button. The device should trip immediately (within 200 milliseconds). If it does not trip, the RCD is faulty: it must be replaced before the pool is used. Reset it after a successful test and move on.
If the pool circuits run from a standard consumer unit without dedicated RCD protection, that is a code C2 defect on an EICR (potentially dangerous) and needs correcting by an electrician before the pool is used.
4. Fault-find the pump circuit
Pool pump problems split into two categories: supply faults (no power reaching the pump) and pump faults (power present but motor not working).
Check the RCBO or MCB for the pump circuit first. If it is tripped, reset with the pump off and see whether it holds. If it trips again immediately, there is likely a wiring fault in the pump circuit or a short in the motor winding. Call an electrician.
If the MCB holds but the pump still does not run, check the timeclock or pump controller. Many controllers have a manual run button or override switch - use it to eliminate a timer fault. Test the voltage at the pump connection point (or at the socket if there is one) with a voltage tester. Reading 230 V at the pump but pump not running points to a motor or capacitor fault in the pump itself, not a wiring fault.
A pump that hums for a few seconds then trips its thermal protection has usually lost its run capacitor and will need a motor rewind or replacement pump head.
5. Check the underwater and poolside lighting
Underwater lights in UK domestic pools must be SELV (Safety Extra Low Voltage), typically 12 V AC from a safety isolating transformer located outside the pool zone. The transformer has a primary winding at 230 V and a secondary winding at 12 V, with no electrical connection between them.
If an underwater light has stopped working, check the transformer before assuming the light fitting is faulty:
- Check the 230 V supply to the primary of the transformer (at the MCB, not at the transformer itself if that means working in Zone 1 with the pool powered).
- If supply is present, check the 12 V output at the secondary terminals. A voltage tester that reads 12 V AC output confirms the transformer is fine and the fault is in the cable run to the pool or in the fitting itself.
- No 12 V output with 230 V supply confirmed means the transformer has failed.
An RCD that trips when the pool light is switched on almost always means water has got into the light fitting or its cable gland. The fitting needs to come out, be inspected, and its seal replaced or the fitting renewed. This is specialist work.
6. Inspect supplementary equipotential bonding
Section 702 requires supplementary bonding to connect all metallic parts in and around the pool zone. This includes handrails, steps, ladders, metallic pipework, heat exchangers, pump casings and any other fixed metalwork.
Look for green/yellow bonding conductors clamped to each metallic item. The conductor size is typically 4 mm² or 6 mm², depending on what it is bonded to. Common faults in a swimming pool environment are:
- Corrosion at the bonding clamps, especially on aluminium or copper fittings near chlorinated water.
- A clamp that has been disturbed during maintenance and not refitted properly.
- New metalwork added (pipework replacement, handrail, heat pump) without bonding being extended.
You can check for the presence of bonding conductors visually. You cannot verify they are electrically sound without a low-resistance bonding test using a proper installation tester. That is part of a periodic inspection (EICR) and needs an electrician with calibrated equipment.
