Helpful video reference. Gary Hayers of GSH Electrical walks through the complete 2-plate circuit with wiring diagrams in his video "Lighting Circuit 2 Plate Method Taking the Feed to the Switch and Connecting a 1 Way Switch & Light". Gary is a UK-qualified electrician producing domestic wiring training content. The video covers both the theory and the physical connections at each point, using correct BS 7671 wiring colours throughout.
1. Understand the 2-plate layout
The "2-plate" name refers to the two connection points in this circuit: the switch back box and the light fitting. Compare that with the junction box method, which uses a ceiling junction box as a third connection point. In the 2-plate layout there is no junction box; the cable runs directly between the switch and the fitting.
How the cables run:
- The incoming supply cable (brown live, blue neutral, bare earth, typically 1.0 mm² or 1.5 mm² twin-and-earth) arrives at the switch back box from the consumer unit or from a preceding point on the circuit.
- A second cable - the switch drop - runs from the switch back box up into the ceiling void and across to the light fitting position. This is also typically 1.0 mm² twin-and-earth.
What each conductor in the switch drop does:
- Switch drop brown: carries the switched live from the switch L1 terminal to the fitting. It is only live when the switch is on.
- Switch drop blue: carries the permanent neutral from the switch box through to the fitting. It does not pass through the switch at all.
- Switch drop earth: connects the earth continuity between the switch back box and the fitting.
The key point: the switch only breaks the live conductor. The neutral bypasses the switch and goes straight through. This is correct - you must never switch the neutral without also switching the live.
2. Switch off and confirm dead
At the consumer unit, turn off the MCB for the lighting circuit you are working on. If there are several lighting circuits and you are unsure which breaker controls the affected circuit, switch off lights in the area first and then identify the breaker by testing.
Before opening any fitting or back box, test dead using an approved voltage tester. Check between line and neutral, line and earth, and neutral and earth at both the switch back box and the light fitting position. Do not proceed until you have confirmed dead at both points.
3. Connect at the switch back box
In the switch back box you have two cables: the incoming supply and the switch drop. Here is what connects where:
- Supply brown (permanent live) → COM terminal on the switch. This feeds the switch with a permanent live.
- Switch drop brown → L1 terminal on the switch. When the switch is on, this conductor carries the switched live up to the light fitting. When off, it is dead.
- Supply blue and switch drop blue → connector block. Both neutrals join here and the permanent neutral passes through to the fitting. Neither neutral goes near the switch terminals.
- All earth conductors → earth terminal block or the earth terminal on the switch plate. Sleeve each bare earth in green-yellow sleeving before connecting.
On a standard 1-way switch the terminals are labelled COM (or C) and L1. That is it - only two switching terminals. Fit the conductors, tighten each terminal screw firmly, and tuck the cables into the back box without crossing any conductor over an adjacent terminal.
4. Sleeve earth conductors and check conductor identification
Any bare copper earth conductor must be sleeved in green-yellow before it is connected. This applies at the switch back box and at the fitting.
The switch drop blue conductor is a neutral, correctly identified by its blue colour under the current BS 7671 wiring colour scheme. No additional marking is needed. If you are working on an older installation with pre-2004 colours (red, black), sleeve any black conductor that is carrying live potential in brown sleeving and note the colour change in any test report.
5. Connect at the light fitting
At the ceiling rose, batten holder or pendant fitting, the switch drop arrives with its three conductors:
- Switch drop brown (switched live) → live terminal at the fitting.
- Switch drop blue (neutral) → neutral terminal at the fitting.
- Earth → earth terminal at the fitting, with green-yellow sleeving if bare.
If you are connecting a ceiling rose (rather than a batten holder), the rose will have terminal blocks for line, neutral and a loop position. On this wiring method, no conductor enters the loop terminal. Connect the switch drop to the line and neutral terminals only. The lamp flex from the lampholder connects to the same terminals: brown flex to line, blue flex to neutral.
If the fitting is a batten holder or a pendant with connector blocks inside the canopy, connect accordingly and check that the flex leads to the lampholder are connected securely and that no conductor is exposed outside a terminal.
6. Test and restore power
Before restoring power, check visually that no conductor is touching an adjacent terminal and that no insulation is trapped under a faceplate or fitting cover. Fold the cables gently into the back box. Refit the switch plate and the light fitting canopy.
At the consumer unit, restore the MCB. Switch the light on and then off. Both positions should work cleanly. If the MCB or RCD trips the moment the MCB is restored, switch off and check for a conductor making unintended contact with earth. If the light does not come on when the switch is on but trips only when the switch is off, look for a neutral and live being inadvertently transposed at one of the connection points.
