What Is Domestic Wiring?

Domestic wiring is the network of electrical cables, sockets, switches, and fittings in your home that bring power to lights, appliances, and gadgets.
Think of it as your home’s “electricity motorway” – if it’s in good condition, everything runs smoothly; if it’s damaged, it can be dangerous.

Common Wiring Problems & How to Solve Them
1. Old or Damaged Wiring
  • Signs: Flickering lights, burning smells, cracked or frayed cables.

  • Cause: Wiring wears out over decades – older rubber or cloth-insulated cables are especially risky.

  • Solution: Get a qualified electrician to replace the old wiring. Modern PVC-insulated cable lasts much longer and is safer.

2. Overloaded Circuits
  • Signs: Circuit breakers keep tripping, plugs or sockets get hot.

  • Cause: Too many appliances plugged into one circuit.

  • Solution: Spread appliances across different sockets or have extra circuits installed to handle the load.

3. Loose Connections
  • Signs: Sockets or switches feel warm, or make crackling sounds.
  • Cause: Wear and tear, or incorrect installation.

  • Solution: Turn off power at the consumer unit and get an electrician to tighten or replace the connection safely.

4. DIY Wiring Mistakes
  • Signs: Unlabelled wires, messy connections, wrong cable sizes.

  • Cause: Unqualified work done without proper testing.

  • Solution: Have a professional inspect and correct it. DIY electrical work can be illegal if not done to standards.

Points to Watch Out For
  • Never ignore burning smells – electricity can start fires.

  • Don’t overload sockets – use a proper extension lead, not a cheap multi-plug adaptor.

  • Regular checks – Have your wiring inspected every 5–10 years (or sooner in older homes).

  • Qualified electricians only – It’s not just safer, it’s the law for most work.
